VALEDA THERAPY FORMACULAR DEGENERATION
The VALEDA Light Delivery System is the first FDA-approved device for dry age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and the first treatment available for intermediate dry macular degeneration. AMD is a prevalent eye condition that typically affects older adults — it impacts the macula, the central part of the retina responsible for sharp, direct vision and crucial for how we perceive things in front of us. Dry AMD accounts for 80–90% of cases and develops as the macula naturally thins with age and small yellow deposits called drusen build up beneath the retina, gradually breaking down the tissue above and causing slow vision loss. Wet AMD is a rarer form in which abnormal blood vessels develop beneath the retina, leak blood and fluid, and cause faster damage. There is no cure for AMD, but treatments and support options like VALEDA can help slow the progression of vision changes and improve quality of life — an urgent need given that AMD affects roughly 196 million people worldwide today, is projected to reach 288 million by 2040, and accounts for 8.7% of worldwide blindness. VALEDA uses Photobiomodulation (PBM), a therapy that delivers specific multi-wavelength light to the retinal tissues to stimulate cellular activity at the mitochondrial level — boosting cellular function, enhancing metabolic activity, and reducing oxidative stress and inflammation, all major factors in the progression of dry AMD. As the first and only FDA-approved treatment for Dry AMD, VALEDA is non-invasive, painless, safe, and requires no dilation — designed to slow the progression of Dry AMD, improve visual performance, enhance contrast sensitivity, and support healthier retina cells.
INTRODUCING VALEDA
FIRST FDA-APPROVED TREATMENT FOR DRY MACULAR DEGENERATION
A Breakthrough Treatment for Dry AMD
Mostafavi Eye Institute is proud to offer the Valeda Light Delivery System, an FDA-authorized, non-invasive treatment for early-to-intermediate dry age-related macular degeneration (AMD). Using advanced photobiomodulation (PBM) technology, Valeda stimulates retinal cells, reduces inflammation, and helps improve visual function — offering hope where few treatment options previously existed.
This therapy is designed for maintenance of visual function and does not cure AMD, but it represents a significant advancement in slowing progression and preserving your vision.
Treatment Schedule
Patients typically receive a series of 9 treatment sessions delivered over the course of 3 to 5 weeks. This initial treatment course is then repeated every 4 months to maintain results. Clinical studies have shown that treated patients experience a mean improvement of approximately 5 letters on an eye chart — roughly one full line of improved visual acuity.
The Valeda system is indicated for patients with early-to-intermediate dry AMD who have a best-corrected visual acuity between 20/32 and 20/70.
Proven Results
The LIGHTSITE clinical studies demonstrated that patients treated with the Valeda system experienced meaningful improvements compared to sham treatments, including:
– A mean visual acuity improvement of approximately 5 letters
– Reduction in drusen volume
– Slower progression to geographic atrophy
The treatment is well-tolerated, with very few side effects. Some patients may experience temporary dry eye or mild light sensitivity following treatment.
